UTM QS students continue their winning streaks at the annual RICS-RISM International Surveying Conference for undergraduates. They bagged the best overall paper award, 2 special mention paper awards and 3 best presenters awards at this year’s conference which was held on the 7-8 April 2017 hosted by UIAM. There were 60 papers submitted and presented. Participants were from surveying programmes in both public and private  universities from all over Malaysia and abroad.  Among the universities that participated included UM, USM, UiTM, UTM, UIAM, UTAR, UTHM, Taylor’s, INTI, Segi, HarriotWatt, Reading and universities from Thailand, Hong Kong and China. The UTM team won almost 80% of the awards that were up for grabs.

The winner were:

1. 3 Best Presenters: Nor Mahfuzah, Rawiah & Azleen Syamimi

2. 2 Special Mention Papers: Nor Mahfuzah & Afiqah

3. Best Paper – LimZijin

UTM Architecture and Civil Engineering Students Garners Gold and Silver at MSSA OIC 2017

The collaboration of UTM students from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment and the Faculty of Civil Engineering win Top 2 prizes at the prestigious Malaysian Structural Steel Assoc. Open Ideas Competition 2017  Open to all Public Malaysian Schools of Architecture and Engineering the  First prize earned the srudents RM10000 and the 2nd prize RM7000. The winners announcement and prize giving ceremony was held on Thursday, April 13, 2017 during the International Construction Week 2017 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The team that won the first prize consisted of 4 Architecture students and 2  Civil Engineering Students under the supervision of  Dr Abdul Halim Hussein from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, and Assoc. Prof Dr Arizu Sulaiman from the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The  students in the team are Lee Tsun Xian, Team Leader, David Nee Zhi Kang, Lo Wei Meng and Ng Kar King from 3rd yr B Sc Architecture Programme, and Liew Zheng Jia and Yap Zhen Shyong from the 3rd Year Bachelor of Civil Engineering​ Programme.

The second place winners, also supervised by Dr Abdul Halim consisted of 5 architecture and one civil  engineering students, were Khasrul Hanif Hazirin bin Mohd Yusof (team leader), Ain Nadhirah bt Ismail, Kamarul Zaman Bin Zulkifli, Lim Jia Sing, (3rd year B Sc Arch), Ooi Soon Theng (M Arch) and Siti Nur Sakinah Sulaiman (3rd Yr Bachelor of Civil Engineering​)

The competition was for the design of  a youth oriented Centre utilising structural steel domes. The jury, which included an International Juror Mr Michael Holloway from Grimshaw’s  Southern Asia Business, a prestigious international Architectural practice, were especially impressed with the First Place entry that was deemed to be very thoughtful and creative and yet was innovatively and approprately functional for the youth centre and structurally plausible as well.

Child Friendly Cities Workshop

Greenovation Research Group conducted a workshop on Child Friendly Cities at Makassar on 3 to 4 April 2017. From the group, four PhD students, Irfan Suria, Joharudin Samion, Mega Suria and Arti Manikam assisted Dr Ismail Said and Dr Nor Zalina Harun from IIUM to teach fifty 3rd year students from Department of Urban Planning, Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin in Makassar.

They taught how to design five urban spaces as children playspaces in less-privileged neighborhood, an open space beside a park, and a upper class neighborhood. The Alauddin’s students were much delighted to learn the fast approach of designing the children’s environment. The hospitality given by docents and dean of Faculty of Sainstex at Alauddin was superb. Greenovation plans to come again to Makassar in March 2018.

FBE Students Won Champion in the “Young Mayor Competition: Planning a Clean and Green Township 2017” in Singapore

A group of Urban and Regional Planning students, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia won Champion in the Young Mayor Competition: Planning a Clean and Green Township 2017 under Category Senior B organized by Activistar Private Limited, Singapore. The competition was held at the National Design Centre, Singapore on 1 – 2nd April 2017 with the theme “Phnom Penh Rising”.

Activistar’s first Assembly Series of 5 cities (2011-2016) features Hanoi, Iskandar Malaysia, Yangon, Manila and Jakarta. The second Assembly Series of the next 5 cities began with Phnom Penh (2017), and offered all participants a fresh look of South East Asia. Teams from the whole of Southeast Asia were invited to participate, especially students from the case-study country. This was in line with the vision to reach out to as many youths as possible because the sustainability message is universal and is beyond borders. This was to encourage cross border exchanges among youths to increase knowledge and cultural exchange. The competition involved four stages: 1) Workshop, 2) Written Proposal, 3) Multi Media Presentation, and 4) Model Building.

The annual event saw participation in three categories, Junior, Senior A and Senior B. Two (2) groups from UTM, Malaysia were selected to compete in the final round together with eight (8) other groups from Singapore under the senior category – college, polytechnic and university. The judges comprised of members of the architectural/planning professionals, universities, embassies, multi-national corporations and consultants from Indochina.

The team from UTM1 comprising Mr. Wan Muhd. Aqib Wan Mohd. Ashaary, Ms. Josephine Lee Siaw Ling, Ms. Nagananteni Subramanian, Ms. Nurul Ainaa Anuar, Ms. Nurul Amirah Zulkipli , Ms. Nur Husna Mahizan and their group advisor Dr. Siti Hajar Misnan won the first prize. They received SGD1000 and a trophy. Singapore’s Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic won the 1st Runner Up and the 2nd Runner Up respectively. Winners of the competition received their prizes from the judges and the Organisers.

Although the UTM2 team comprising Mr. Raja Ahmad Syakirfikri Raja Samion, Ms. Azreen Nadzirah Azmi, Ms. Umiera Yasmin Ibrahim, Siti Noor Syuhadah Abd. Mulok, Ms. Nakhwa Sa’don, Ms. Siti Amirah Mokhtar and their group advisor Dr. Gobi Krishna Sinniah did not win, they were delighted to make the final round.

Quantity Surveyor and Architecture Students Won Gold Medal in International UTMBridge Competition 2017

A Gold Medal to Quantity Surveyor and Architecture students in the International UTMBridge Competition 2017! Two group of QS and Architecture students won 2nd Prize for Presentation and Multimedia category and 9th Place on Overall Champion out of 80 participants in the competition. The International UTMBridge Competition was organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering held on 27-29 March 2017 in UTM.

They received a total of RM1,150 and a trophy. Congratulations to Syamsul Hendra Mahmud, Nurshikin Mohamad Shukery and Dr. Nafisah Abdul Rahiman, the group advisor from Department of Quantity Surveying and the students.

Mural Art Painting for GEMPAK Community Service in UTM 2017

A group of Landscape Architecture students of Faculty Built Environment formed 3D Mural Wall Art team supervised by Dr. Lee Yoke Lai and Dr. Sapura Mohamad had accomplished mural art painting at Faculty Science-C18, UTM. This mural art project was started from 5th April and completed on 8th April 2017 collaboration with Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPM) and patron by Earth Society members under GEMPAK’17 program conducted by the MPM.

The mural art theme ‘Where Great Mind are Nurtured’ is in line with the faculty vision which is to be known around the world in science and mathematics field that produced experts in it fields. Thus, the mural wall art design contained three major elements to epitomize Physics, Chemistry, and Science Mathematics Departments representing Faculty Science. Indeed, the mural painting inspirations have nurtures a great teamwork among UTM communities.

Landscape UTM Alumni Workshop Series: ‘From Form to Concept’

On 12 March 2017, the Landscape UTM Alumni Workshop Series was continuing with the second workshop which entitled “From Form to Concept”. This workshop patronised by 9 practising Landscape Architects who are all UTM alumni. The workshop participated not only the final year students but also a crowd from lower year landscape students. The workshop began with a design critique session of the final year students’ projects. Likewise, the crit session essentially to internalise students’ conceptual design and their critical thinking in developing landscape master plan and detail area design.

After the lunch break, the program continues by the open lecture delivered by LAr. Mr Lee Fei Chong, Alfred and Mr Ng Sze Oun. Both speakers respectively shared the creating a landscape plan using form composition, philosophy concept through art; and inspiring futuristic to create the good design concept. Throughout workshop session, another fruitful learning process pertains a great landscape design involvement is from concept stages till landscape detail construction. 

 

Architecture Student Won Third Place Best Poster in 2nd International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition

The paper titled “An Integrated Green Research Centre for Built Environment” authored by Sayang Asniessa Bt. Mohd Azman, Malsiah Bt. Hamid & Dodo Yakubu Aminu.

Won 3rd Place Best Poster in the just concluded 2nd International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC) 2017 which was held on 30th March 2017 at the Mercu Alam Bina, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The paper was a product of Sayang Asniessa Bt Mohd Azman 2nd year 2nd Semester Design Studio Work 2015/2016 Session supervised by Dr. Malsiah Bt. Hamid. The outcome was an iconic green design for the built environment researchers. Ulrich (1983), Psycho-Evolutionary Theory (PET) for stress recovery was used to underpin the research.

UTM FAB Architecture wins 2nd & 3rd in Autodesk Malaysia Design Competition 2016

UTM Architecture lecturers and students won 2nd and 3rd places for Autodesk Malaysia Design Competition (AMDC) 2016. The prize-giving ceremony, which took place on 8th May 2017, was officiated by YB Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching at Dewan Za’ba, Ministry of Higher Education, Putrajaya.

 
Overall over 500 entries from all IPTA and IPTS all over the country were received by the organiser, Prestariang Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education. There were three main categories that were contested, which were Architecture, Industrial Design and Creative Media Design under the theme of 3D for Society – DREAM, DESIGN & DELIVER.  Under the Architecture category, five UTM entries were shortlisted and two went through to the final, the 2nd and 3rd places. The 2nd place with RM 2000.00 winning cash was awarded to Phuah Lin, who is in her 3rd year Bachelor programme, under the supervision of AP Ar Ramli Jamaluddin, who also received RM 750.00 for his winning. The 3rd place with RM 1000.00 cash prize, was won by Mohd Izzuddin Awang Junit, who is now in his final year of Master of Architecture. Mohd Izzuddin was mentored by his supervisor, Dr Sharifah Salwa Syed Mahdzar, who also received RM500.00 for the win.

Architecture Students Wins Prestigious Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia Awards

UTM architecture students are once again  in the limelight when they won 3 of the 4  prestigious PAM Ferruni Ceramiche Award 2017   and one out of 2 PAM Inovar Award during the glamorous PAM annual dinner 2017 at the JW Marriot Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The 3 UTM B Sc Architecture students are Muhammad Aizat bin Anuar and Ho Wen Han from 2SBEA who each won RM10,000 and Lim Chun Yan 3 SBEA who won RM5000. Ooi Soon Theng, from UTM’s M Arch program won a total of RM15,000 from the PAM Inovar Award. They were among hundreds of applicants from all LAM accredited schools of architecture in Malaysia.

Program Komuniti Lestari 2017 di Felda Ulu Penggeli, Johor

Seramai 51 orang mahasiswa dari Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah, Fakulti Alam Bina yang mengambil kursus kokurikulum UKQR2062 telah menganjurkan Program Komuniti Lestari 2017 pada 27 – 29 April 2017 di FELDA Ulu Penggeli, Keluang, Johor. FELDA Ulu Penggeli terpilih sebagai lokasi pelaksanaan Program Komuniti Lestari 2017 kerana mereka telah dinobatkan sebagai pemenang Anugerah Keceriaan Kampung FELDA (AKKF) peringkat kebangsaan pada tahun 2016.

Program ini dilaksanakan dengan objektif utama untuk menggalakkan mahasiswa berinteraksi dengan masyarakat serta menyalurkan ilmu dan kemahiran yang diperolehi sepanjang pengajian di universiti dalam bidang perancangan bandar dan wilayah agar dapat membantu meningkatkan tahap kelestarian FELDA Ulu Penggeli ke peringkat yang lebih tinggi.

Program yang telah berlangsung selama 3 hari 2 malam  mengandungi beberapa aktiviti interaktif yang melibatkan penduduk setempat bersama mahasiswa antaranya ialah Bengkel Pelan Komprehensif Pembangunan Komuniti (PKPK) FELDA Ulu Penggeli 2025 (Pembangunan Pelancongan), Pengindahan Landskap dan Susunatur Galeri FELDA Ulu Penggeli, Program School Attack di Sek. Keb. Ulu Penggeli, Senamrobik dan Malam Silaturahim.

Program ini dianggap telah mencapai objektif apabila mendapat kerjasama yang baik dari pihak pengurusan FELDA Ulu Penggeli yang diketuai oleh En. Md. Jaffar Mohd. Noah, barisan kepimpinan JKKR, GPW dan penyertaan 17 keluarga sebagai keluarga angkat. Kerjasama yang baik juga diterima daripada pensyarah Fakulti Alam Bina, Prof. Ibrahim Ngah dan Dr. Mohd. Hisyam sebagai pakar rujuk bagi Program PKPK dan pengindahan galeri.

Justeru itu, selaku Pensyarah Penasihat, Dr. Siti Hajar Misnan dan Pengarah Program, Cik Amirah Huda Azlan, kami menyampaikan penghargaan dan terima kasih kepada semua pihak yang telah terlibat dalam menjayakan Program Komuniti Lestari 2016 di FELDA Ulu Penggeli.

NC rasmi Lata Jernih

JOHOR BAHRU, 21 Mei 2017 – Naib Canselor Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM), Prof Datuk Ir Dr Wahid Omar hari ini merasmikan Lata Jernih, satu produk ekopelancongan terletak di Hutan Rekreasi dalam kampus UTM Johor Bahru.

Menurutnya, pembinaan Lata Jernih menggunakan kepakaran dalaman yang terdiri dari staf dan mahasiswa UTM hanya menelan belanja RM49,000 berbanding kos sebenar RM164,899 jika dibuat melalui proses tender.

Seramai 52 orang mahasiswa dan 10 staf dari Jabatan Lanskap, Fakulti Alam Bina UTM terlibat dalam membangunkan Lata Jernih itu yang turut mendapat kerjasama dari Unit Kampus Ekopelancongan, Pejabat Harta Bina dan Pusat Kerjaya UTM.

“Pembinaan Lata Jernih dijalankan menerusi program Job On Campus untuk memberi pengalaman kerja sebenar kepada mahasiswa UTM mempraktikkan ilmu yang mereka pelajari di bilik kuliah kepada situasi kerja sebenar.

“Menerusi program ini UTM berjaya menjimatkan dua petiga daripada kos sebenar jika diserahkan kepada kontraktor luar,’ katanya.

Majlis perasmian dihadiri oleh Pengarah Harta Bina Profesor Dr Abdul Latif Salleh, Pengarah Pusat Kerjaya Prof. Madya Dr. Othman Ibrahim dan Pensyarah Jabatan Senibina Lanskap Prof. Madya Dr Mohd Sarofil Abu Bakar.

Naib Canselor berkata, konsep pembinaan Lata Jernih yang dilakukan secara manual tanpa penggunaan peralatan berat bagi mengelakkan kerosakan kawasan sekitar untuk mengekalkan persekitaran semula jadinya. Bahan binaan semulajadi juga turut digunakan termasuk batu dan kayu yang terdapat di kawasan sekeliling.

Beliau turut mempelawa pelajar yang terlibat dalam program membangunkan Lata Jernih supaya tampil mengemukakan cadangan untuk mengurus Hutan Rekreasi agar dapat menarik lebih ramai pengunjung dan menjana pendapatan sebanyak mungkin.

Katanya, pada tahun lalu seramai 14,899 pengunjung dicatatkan mengunjungi Hutan Rekreasi untuk mengadakan pelbagai aktiviti dan jumlah itu meningkat kepada 20 ribu orang termasuk yang datang untuk berehat dan beriadah bersama keluarga.

Pembukaan Lata Jernih bakal memberi satu lagi dimensi baru dalam inisiatif kampus Ekopelancongan UTM yang telah diperkenalkan sejak 2009.

Nama Lata Jernih diilhamkan daripada perkataan “lata” di dalam Bahasa Inggeris yang bermaksud jeram yang airnya mengalir bertingkat dari tahap atas ke bawah. Jatuhan air jernihnya yang bertingkat serta kaya dengan flora dan fauna mampu memberikan ketenangan minda kepada para pengunjung yang datang.

Pokok-pokok hutan seperti gaharu, tongkat ali, jelutong, cengal, jering dan palas hutan turut ditanam di kawasan sekitar bagi menghidupkan suasana hutan semulajadi untuk dinikmati.

Selain itu, terdapat juga satu unit wakaf yang didirikan di kawasan berkenaan bagi untuk kemudahkan pengunjung berehat dan bersantai sambil menikmati permandangan di sekitar Lata Jernih ini.

Kedudukannya yang strategik di dalam Hutan Rekreasi turut memberikan nilai tambah bagi pengunjung yang ingin menjalankan aktiviti rekreasi dalam satu tempat antaranya program motivasi, merentas hutan sambil menikmati flora dan fauna serta boleh juga menginap di Rumah Kampung yang terdapat di kawasan berdekatan.

Bagi meningkatkan jumlah pengunjungke Hutan Rekreasi seluas 53 hektar itu, Unit Ekopelancongan, Pejabat Harta Bina sedang dalam proses menambah daya tarikan dengan menyediakan pelbagai kemudahan antaranya, chalet, kawasan perkhemahan, sukan memanah dan All-terrain vehicle (ATV) bagi membolehkan pengunjung menjelajah kawasan berkenaan yang kaya dengan flora dan fauna.

Former UTM Architecture student won top prize in the PLUS MUFORS Road Reels : Short Video Competition

Former UTM Architecture student, Bakri Hafiz Hisham won top prize in the PLUS Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFORS) Road Reels : Short Film Competition. The video entitled “Empat” won the first prize for the ‘Best Use of Humour’ category. Bakri received the Grand Prize award and a Volkswagon Beetle car. Bakri was the Second Prize winner in the same competition in 2011.
